Raising awareness of the crucial role pollinators play in our ecosystem

Pollinator Project

The Youth Urban Beekeeping Project, in collaboration with Northlands and the Edmonton Community Foundation, is an innovative program now in its second year, focused on raising awareness of the importance of pollinators to the environment while teaching beekeeping skills to local Edmonton youth.

For a number of years bee populations have been on the decline due to farming practices and disease. They play a critical role in the functioning of our ecosystem and are essential as pollinators in the production of more than one third of all the food we eat.

Through the program the youth participants learn about the importance of bees to the environment and gain technical skills related to keeping bees including woodworking (making hives), honey processing and selling honey.
