Edmonton Youth Buzzing Over Urban Beekeeping Program
October 21st, 2016
EDMONTON– Today, Prince’s Charities Canada held a joint presentation with Northlands (Edmonton Agricultural Society) celebrating the work done with local youth through an urban beekeeping program supported by the Edmonton Community Foundation.
“Through Northlands’ collaboration with Prince Charities Canada, and the support of the Edmonton Community Foundation, we are able to bridge a gap and educate young Edmontonians not only on the importance of bees in the production chain, but also provide practical experience in beekeeping,” said Tim Reid, President and CEO, Northlands.
The Prince’s Beekeeping Project is a free youth club open to all Edmonton and area youths ages 11-19 years old. Led by local bee expert Dustin Bajer, the students learn the skills required to keep and maintain urban bees. In addition to technical beekeeping, hive building and honey harvesting, there is also a focus on developing entrepreneurship and leadership skills.
Northlands is deeply rooted in the community and is poised to undertake a remarkable transformation. As Canada’s largest agricultural society, Northlands has cultivated the knowledge and experience to bring people together, spark interest and shine a light on Alberta’s agricultural industry. Northlands will foster an appreciation for the industry and give insight into the journey from gate to plate through educational programs, special events and the province’s culinary/food distribution channels. The Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) acts as a bridge between donors and greater Edmonton charities to help create and maintain a strong, vibrant community for generations to come. Through permanent endowment funds, the Foundation currently disburses 4% of the income to greater Edmonton charities. ECF is the 4th largest community foundation in Canada and is a member of the Community Foundations of Canada, the Council on Foundations, Imagine Canada, and the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. www.ecfoundation.org
