Meet Joanne – a Get into Administration success story

February 7, 2018

“Thanks to the program, I was able to get into the door of such a large business and be granted with so many opportunities to challenge myself and develop skills for a career in finance.”

Joanne moved to Canada in 2015 from China. Although she had a post-secondary degree and was a strong student, she was unable to secure a job. She kept hearing the same thing from employers, that she did not have enough Canadian work experience.

She started to get discouraged and concerned about her future in Canada until she heard about Prince’s Charities Canada’s Get Into program. The program, originally created in the UK by the Prince’s Trust, combines practical training with work experience and was the perfect solution for Joanne.

“I am very happy that Prince’s Charities Canada and Loblaw gave us this opportunity. Usually what happens when you apply for a job is that your resume just gets stacked up and you don’t really get an opportunity.”

The five-week intensive administration program provided two weeks of technical skills training and a three-week internship with Loblaw.

The program gave her the skills, work experience and confidence she needed. Two days after graduation, Loblaw offered her a job. She’s on track for a successful career in business administration.

“Thanks to the program, I was able to get into the door of such a large business and be granted with so many opportunities to challenge myself and develop skills for a career in finance. I am very grateful that there are programs like Get Into to bridge resources and opportunities for youth who have hard time seeking a job or career, especially those who do not have related work experience, or professional relations/resources, such as newcomers and fresh graduates.”
